Zain Iraq sponsors “StartUp Weekend” movement in Baghdad & Najaf To support creative young entrepreneurs, startups and creative talents


In line with its strategy to support creative minds and innovative ideas, Zain Iraq, part of Zain Group - the leading mobile telecom network provider in the MENA region, sponsors the “StartUp Weekend” in Baghdad and Najaf. The event is designed to select the best emerging technology ideas and projects and attended by designers, marketers and local entrepreneurs. This initiative falls under Zain Iraq vision and strategy to support young Iraqi talents in different industries, empower them and help them to turn their ideas and dreams into successful ventures.

“StartUp Weekend” is a three day activities in every governorate, designed for start-up companies and young entrepreneurs in various fields, where a a number of developers, designers, marketers and young Iraqi project managers in addition to technicians working in the field of ICT. Three Winning projects will be selected at the end of the competition.

“We are committed in Zain Iraq to support and empower the youth in several industries they’re active in, including entrepreneurship & startups. “StartUp Weekend” is a platform to exchange expertise, acquire experience, and develop their ventures especially in the fields of ICT”, said Ali Al-Zahid, CEO of Zain Iraq.

“As we believe that the future of development in Iraq and the region, depends on young creative talents in ICT, all projects submitted by the participants will be reviewed and enhanced by key experts in support with Zain Iraq. Based on that, we seek to raise awareness and create opportunities that help build the creative minds that will in return support future entrepreneurs,” Al-Zahid added.

The Startup Weekend is one of the largest platforms targeting entrepreneurs, developers, and designers and is designed to bring ideas to life through launching new startup companies. In the past two months, Zain Iraq has focused on empowering more than 1,000 young men and women entrepreneurs in Iraq from technical and administrative perspectives who established companies such as Code Lab and The Week specialized in developing mobile applications and websites. Zain Talk platform is a series of seminars that discuss different topics including entrepreneurship and e-commerce in addition to Hackathon Conference for Innovation, which was held in Erbil in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Some projects and ideas aim at supporting refugees among other platforms and projects that supports the entrepreneurship ecosystem.
